14 September gallery visit to Artspace & Fresh Gallery

Artspace Gallery, Auckland City.
Exhibition: Offstage 7
Curator: Louisa Afoa

Offstage 7 had works that were performance, and the works were moving images.

Walking into the gallery you had a:
(Left to right)

  • Screen with a pair of headphones and a set of large pillows to sit on while watching this documentary. Sitting there makes you feel like you're part of the talk that is happening in the moving image.
  • You walk into this hallway where you have a big area to watch Jermaine Deans moving image of him voguing (type of dance) mostly around Otara and Sylvia Park. There is nothing in the space which makes you want to runway down the space and vogue too.
  • You then have Matavai Taulangau moving image. Two screens side by side with a seating area to sit on. The level of where the tv is, is high when you sit down which is uncomfortable as you will be there for a while.
  • Two small grey tvs lay on the ground. You see two faces looking at each other as the tv face each other face to face. I found this really smart because you have the tvs facing each other with the faces of people play. I wasn't able to watch throughout the whole thing as I only stood there for 10 seconds as it was uncomfortable for me to stand there looking down. It makes the viewer get down to that personal level.
  • I set of what looked like white headstones were laid out with flower leis on top.
  • A moving image on the right side of the wall as you walk in plays the ocean. A voice over of a lady speaking as you watch the sea.
  • In the middle of the gallery there was a young lady with an eraser, rubbing out the map. She was sitting on a cushion, on the floor, while leaning and working on a table.

I wasn't able to see the back room works as I didn't have enough time.

19 August Gallery visit (Trip with Tautai)

Te Uru Gallery

Artist: Janet Lilo.
Exhibition: Status Update.
Curator: Ioana Gordon-Smith.
Dates: 28 May-28 August.

Janet Lilo had works in different areas of the gallery for her exhibition Status Update.

On the ground floor she had a conversation by her and someone in florescent lights.

In another room, Gallery two, the room was filled with 10,000 machine printed photographs that make one big mural.
Common colour: green.
In the centre there were stacks of wood crate boxes.

In the next room there were 1000 instagram pics in a polaroid form that were laid out on wooden panels. She cut the panels herself as we were able to talk with Janet Lilo herself at All Goods Artspace in Avondale.

Another Exhibition that was showing in Te Uru was Jae Kang's Gurmon Sup.
Through out the gallery you could see the black pipes creeping up to its location in Gallery four.
Once I walked into Gallery Four I noticed the work straight away as I've seen it at MIT, Z block at the beginning of 2015.

You notice that the black pipes are hot glued down to the floor&walls.
